George Turns 24!

Today is my husband’s 24th birthday! Whoooo!!!  Here is a little tribute to him. Below are some some well known bits, and some best kept secrets about my handsome husband, favorite person, and love of my life: George Austin Terlep.IMAG0389

  • Starting with the obvious: He LOVES Dr. Pepper. If it came in human form, he would have married it. He swears he can taste all 23 flavors of deliciousness.

140104_507 He has a definitive ranking of  which restaurants and fast food joints have the best Dr. Pepper. If you think that a Dr. Pepper taste the same no matter where you go, you would most definitely be WRONG! (if you are wondering, straight from the can is the best)

We were Doctor+Pepper for Halloween. Get it?

  • I’d like to start off the second item by mentioning that George and I have a very trusting and committed relationship. BUT. There is one person I fear that some day my husband may run off with. It’s not some ex girl friend from his past. It’s Trent Raines. IMAG0835 140104_412IMAG0251 148865_1545686844601_3953463_n

199601_4044590435434_1906196721_n These two have a love affair that can not be put into words. They are two peas in a pod that have SO much in common (including their  passion for the  Lord and their obsession for Dr. Pepper, the latest tech gadgets, and marrying  beautiful women ha). Luckily Trent’s wife, Katie,  is awesome and we can bond while the boys are off getting their bro time in. George didn’t grow up with a brother,  but there is no doubt that God gave George a brother in Trent.140104_358

Oh and a little bonus story: I do not kid. On our honeymoon we were relaxing on the beach with pina coladas in hand, and my brand new husband looks at me and says. “Wow this is paradise. The only thing that could make this better is if Trent were here too”.  ON OUR HONEYMOON! My jaw dropped and he quickly added, “…and Katie too of  course. You guys could paint each others nails or something”.

We could get Trent a coozie that says "Mr.'s Best Man"

Looks like we may need to plan a  double date vacation sometime.

  • He is a true Royals fan. I’m not sure why a kid who lives about half way between KC and Cardinal Nation would pick the Royals, but George did. Even when they loose  (aka the last 35 years) he wears his blue proud. This October was a VERY exciting time in our house. IMAG1720 IMAG2082 IMAG2074
  • George is a night owl. In college staying up until 4am then sleeping in until noon was his normal. His big-boy job puts a little damper on that schedule, but some times he is still a little hard to wake up in the mornings.

  • I do most of the cooking in the house, but every morning George makes a healthy breakfast . Green smoothies for the win!

  • He also has become a pro griller. His specialties are Hawaiian chicken kabobs and the most mouth watering salmon known to man kind. I don’t know how he does it, but you should come over and try it for yourself. IMAG1687
Remember that time he made ALL the hot dogs.

  • To his family, he is known as George Austin or GA…sometimes when his is being silly I call him Austin George. His camp friends know him as just Austin. Sometimes it can get confusing.

  • He’s handy. Since we’ve moved he has replaced/installed all kinds of things in the house. He has also changed a lot of tires and batteries since I’ve known him.IMAG1743 215341_1539977421605_5145880_n IMAG1215 1408507740673
  • He’s a nerd. We met at engineering school so it’s to be expected. When I say nerd, I mean really really smart…and a total nerd 🙂

  • He can dance. He’s got to be in a good mood, and surrounded by people that make him feel comfortable, but when he is, he can really cut a rug. Remember this? He learned this dance in just 1 day!IMG_279295166960829 1536731_733127453373145_1262629692_n 140104_671
  • He like games. Playing sports, video games, backgammon, yard games, you name it. He is pretty competitive and likes to win. Good thing he usually does. IMAG1707He  thinks he’s good at corn hole, but we all know I carry the team.
  • He claims he doesn’t like to cuddle, but sometimes (when it’s cold) I wake up like this (and I love it).

    love me some cuddles!

  • He likes Pretty Little Liars. He claims he just watches it with me, but we all know he wants to find out who A is just as much as all the other teen age girls.

  • A kid at Chuckie cheese = George at Dave and busters. And the best prize? Giant slinkies!IMAG1319
  • He has a hard time keeping his eyes open in pictures. 427939_3875862457535_1440106692_n306412_2252987646679_951607280_n

All funny things aside, I am so lucky to have George in my life. He is a brilliant man who is slow to anger and full of love and understanding. Above all, George challenges me to be a better person through his honestly, patience, commitment, and strength.  I have the privilege to spend my life with him.

Happy 25th Birthday Shannon!

In honor of my sister’s 25th birthday I wanted to take the time to share 10 (slightly embarrassing) facts/ memories you may not know about Shannon, my older sister…. Okay so those of you who are really close may know many of these, but as her one and only sister, I feel I may have a few little nuggets for you.

All you need to know about Shannon

According to her sister

  1. Shannon’s Love Interest …. The one and only Nick Carter of the Backstreet Boys will forever be her heart’s desire.

“Nick Carter ❤ ‘sShannon” was even written in the cement of our cold-a- sac…so it must be true. Once BSB quit making music, Nick got fat, and dabbled in drugs. Shannon’s heart began leaning  more toward Justin Timberlake .

Normally I would chastise a girl for switching boy band loyalty, but JT is an exception.  I also think that I read in her diary in the 2nd grade that she had a crush on a boy named Kevin in her class. (Whoops cat’s out of the bag…it’s not my fault you hid your key in the most obvious spot.) And then there is Josh.

    Check out these cuties!

(Josh, just a word of warning: I am pretty sure if any of these guys tired to make a move on my sister you would be a goner…sorry bout cha.)

Looks like Nick got cleaned up. Josh may have some competition.

  1. Shannon went through a young hippie phase around age 13th. She had a totally rad pair of orange bell bottoms from LTD2, lots of peace sign accessories, and even a hippie themed birthday party. I specifically remember her telling me that she would  never wear makeup because it killed the whales. I’d say she  still has a hippie chic style but does wear make up these days. Not a ton.. probably not enough to kill a whale.

  1. “Shannon poopy the slide”…if you do not know what this means ASK HER (or any Whitney)! It will be worth your time.
  1. Nicknames: Shannon is a hard name to shorten. Shanny is definitely not  approved by this diva. However she has been called:
    1. Judy : Short for Big-booty- Judy
    2. Shay: This is my personal favorite
    3. $ (pronounced “Money” but written like Ke$ha): Short for Shay-Money…not 100% sure how this originated.
    1. Sacaja Whitney: for her sweet navigating skills
    1. ShanWow: Summer welcome

  1. Before I came into her life, Shannon had two imaginary friends: Lauren and Katie. They often took the blame for her messes

  1. Shannon is a master snow cone maker. She worked a few summers at the pool concession stand and would sing “Come to my Window”, by  Melissa Etheridge, when business was slow.
  1. She has been in 5 weddings (counting the one this coming August).

  1. She is a TV star. Shannon appeared in a local TV commercial last year. Her face was only on the TV for about 3 seconds, but they ran that ad ever commercial break!484623_3633711638327_1640134215_n
  1. Her wardrobe is mainly black and gold

  1. She is the most flexible in our family. She can do a mean handstandWhitneys 176and splitssplitzand a bunch of other yoga/ Pilates/dance moves.

I hope you have a great birthday Shay!

Best Birthday Gifts

My birthday has always been a pretty exciting time for me each year. Being born on August 2nd has some major pros if you are looking for a birthday. It’s almost ALWAYS hot enough for  swimming. August is when ice cream cakes taste the best (if you can manage to get it to the party before it melts). School starts just around the corner, and the beginning of August comes like a wake up call reminding you of all the fun things you want to do before heading back to school.  That “wake up call” usually means that all of your friends and family are down for a good time. Usually this means that my birthDAY usually can turn into a birthWEEK. I call it Julie Birthday Palooza. This birthday was spent moving to Kansas City. It was a lot of hard work, but very exciting to be finally settling down after living out of a suitcase (or a few suitcases) all summer.

Dairy Queen Ice Cream Cakes are the BEST!
Dairy Queen Ice Cream Cakes are the BEST!

Before the move, my family invited my grandparents over for a little birthday/going away dinner. It was perfect to be able to spend one of my last nights in St. Louis celebrating with them over dinner and a show at the Muny.

This leads me to the point of this post…birthday presents.

Ever since I grew out of the Barbie phase, I can usually count on getting clothes or accessories (usually from Kohl’s) or maybe a few things I was wanting for the upcoming school year. Every once in a while, I specifically ask for something special…not always the most conventional birthday gifts.

Whitney birthday gifts can sometimes be a little out there.

I think it was my 15th birthday a begged for my very own external hard drive. Yes I am a nerd. It was probably around this time I starting thinking about a major in computer engineering.

hard drive

I think it was about 100 -300GB drive. I stalked the ads for a good deal hoping that mom would spend the $80-100 that much on me this year.  Today you can buy a terabyte that is half the size for cheaper.

My sister over at  Call me Shannon turned 16 about the time MTV was airing “My Super Sweet Sixteen”. Did Shannon get a car? A huge party with a guest star Beyoncé performance? Or a cute puppy? None of your guesses would be correct…because she got…drum roll….ACT prep software (and I think a bag of candy kisses). Rather depressing if you ask me. ( If this story moves your heart and you would like to give Shannon a make up present…she is still waiting for that Beyoncé performance help a sister out!).

ACT

Shannon also has a pretty good birthday story about the year her boyfriend got her cheese. Read about it here.

This year for my brother’s birthday, Shannon and I found the perfect gift. An inflatable bear head. Yes, it is just what it sounds like. Looks like a stuffed bear head on the wall, but its inflatable. We have also gifted him a car freshener that smells like bacon, a patriotic tuxedo t shirt, and a Lieutenant Dan Army T shit. Isn’t having a little brother fun?

Dad, sometimes gets a new book or CD, but he almost always gets socks, reading glasses, and underwear. Not just any under ware, but custom designed skivvies. Each of us decorates a plain pair with markers. Its kind of a tradition. Doesn’t every father of a cheerleader  need a pair of undies that says “Cheer dad” (Sorry Dad for spilling your secrets).

Mom is the trickiest… my last few presents have been chocolate (always safe), salad tongs, chia seeds, and another set of salad tongs. Yes she makes a lot of salad…no I do not get her salad tongs every year. It was a special circumstance.

This year I asked my grandma for a sewing kit. No I am not turning 70. I just feel like sewing is kind of a dying art in my generation, which I think is really uncool. My grandma can repair, hem, or sew just about anything from scratch. She used to make some of her kids clothes, she recently made a cover for my uncles boat,  she has made many beautiful quilts, and made alterations for everyone in the family. I think being able to sew is a great skill to have. Just like with a car, doing your own repairs can save a ton of money. You are also open the door to so (sew) much creativity when you are able to sew! I have learned a little over the years from my mom and grandma about basic repairs, and am ready to continue learning and practicing. My grandma bought me the cutest sewing box and a kit to get me started. I love it so much!

sewing box

Just a few days after my birthday/move I happened to look up sewing machines on Craig’s list and fond an ad for a barley used machine for $25. I couldn’t believe it, why would someone sell something so nice and new for so cheap? When I went to check it out I learned that the lady bought it new, sewed herself a dress, and wore it to work. At work the seams busted revealing her undies for the whole workplace. Out of shame, the sewing machine was moved to the basement until  it found its new home with me!

I have already completed my first project. It turned out so well! Details tomorrow!
